About Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders

“Disordered eating” refers to having a problematic relationship with food which may, depending on symptoms, meet the diagnostic criteria for an “eating disorder.” These include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), among others. In many cases, a person may not fit into a specific category, but still have an unhealthy relationship with food that causes them to feel preoccupied with food, weight, shape or size, or to alter their eating habits in potentially harmful ways.

Typically, a person struggling with any form of disordered eating may have behaviors that include:

  • Obsessive focus on food, including how much to eat, what to eat, when, and more.
  • Anxiety about eating or food that affects social experiences.
  • Excessive worry about whether certain foods are “bad” or may lead to weight gain.
  • Negative thoughts about weight or body shape.
  • Eating as a result of stress or high emotion.
  • Restricting food even when hungry.
  • Frequent interest in and attempts at fad diets.

Our expert team of registered dietitian nutritionists provide an array of nutrition counseling services, catered meal support, custom meal plans, and more, all to help address these behaviors and help people develop healthier and sustainable long term eating habits as well as address and improve the overall relationship with food.
